This is Very Strange, And Maybe...Cool?

The Singularity Is Near, Ray Kurzweil, Brown University, Cyborg, Extreme Tech, extremetech.com, brown university researchers

The Cyborg is Near!Sharon Salzberg sent myself and another Brown University alum she knows this article from extremetech.com (the website name sort of says it all), because "Researchers at Brown University have succeeded in creating the first wireless, implantable, rechargeable, long-term brain-computer interface. The wireless BCIs have been implanted in pigs and monkeys for over 13 months without issue, and human subjects are next." Um...Go, Brown?Earlier this summer, while visiting my father, I picked up his copy of Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity Is Near. The notion that artificial intelligence is going to combine with the human mind, and eventually take over, is scary to me. The the implications for social spaces and privacy, as well as attention deficit disorder skyrocketing seem so apparent to me while reading about the new Google Glass device. It is one thing to watch the takeover of devices that connect us to the Internet, and probably are changing how our brain interacts with the outside world and each other in very startling ways. It's quite another thing to think about robotic equipment inside my brain wirelessly. Maybe I'm a purist, but I just don't see this as where humanity wants to go right now.And a final question for all the sci-fi philosophers out there: what does an enlightened cyborg experience?(follow Ethan on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram)Photo from article on extremetech.com
